Manuscript Review

Instructions for reviewers

Conservation and Society is an interdisciplinary journal that aims to receive contributions from conservation professionals from a variety of disciplines. Quality peer reviews are therefore critical for maintaining the high standard of the journal. We appreciate the considerable time and effort that our reviewers put in, at the same time we request you to be fair and prompt and to evaluate the manuscripts carefully.

As the manuscript is a privileged communication, we request our reviewers to maintain confidentiality. However, you can solicit help to clarify a technical point. If you feel that a colleague is more qualified to carry out the review, please inform the Editor and seek permission to transfer the manuscript. If there is a conflict of interest or if you feel that you may not be able to give an unbiased review, please contact the Editor. We expect our reviewers to review manuscripts within three weeks. If you cannot review a manuscript within the given time period, please inform the Editor.

Apart from filling in the rating form, reviewers are encouraged to give general as well as specific comments to the author(s) in order to help improve the quality of the manuscript. General comments should address the overall merit of the manuscript, the relevance of the article to the readership of the journal, originality, organisation and clarity, and length. In addition, reviewers are encouraged to give specific comments on statistical methods, design and analysis, interpretation of results, citations, errors and overlap with previously published papers. A very important criterion that should be evaluated for all submissions is whether the article will be comprehensible to its interdisciplinary readership (and if not, comments to improve this aspect).

Reviewers are given the option to remain anonymous. If you wish to do so, make sure that you remove any clues to your identity such as marked stationary, comment boxes in electronic files that contain a user id, and of course signing your name by mistake. While using a track changes option or using comment boxes, please make sure that you reset the user information using the ‘tools’ and ‘options’ menu. While we place a great deal of trust in out reviewers, we request you once again to give a fair and objective review of each manuscript (and not the author).

Please proceed to the next page to type your recommendation to the editor and comments for authors. These can be sent by email or post. However, if you have made notes on the hardcopy, please dispatch this to the Editorial Office. For further queries, write to editor@conservationandsociety.org with a copy to kshanker@ces.iisc.ernet.in and the Managing Editor meera@atree.org as a safeguard against loss of mail.
